Like most other state lotteries, the Lotto Florida consists of a collection of games that choose the winning numbers by a random drawing of numbered balls. These games all have different odds and are played at different intervals. You choose your potential winning numbers, in advance of the actual drawing, by submitting a card with your number selections to a local retailer or allowing the computer to randomly assign the numbers which is called a “Quick Pick”.
In the Florida games, winning numbers are selected live on various television stations throughout the state. Depending on the game, drawings are held daily, twice daily or twice a week. Each game has a different range of numbers and prizes which may vary depending on the odds of winning among other factors as detailed below.
Fantasy5 numbers are drawn daily and to win the jackpot, a player must match five numbers between 1 and 36. The top prize starts at $200,000.00 and increases with each drawing if no winning ticket was purchased.
Play4 and Cash3 numbers are drawn twice daily Winning Play4 is relatively easy, just match four numbers between 0 and 9. Players can win up to $5,000.00 depending on the play type purchased and the amount played. Similar to the previous game, to win the Cash3 game, a player must match three numbers between 0 and 9. Cash3 players can win up to $500.00 depending on the play type purchased and the amount played.
Powerball, Florida Lotto and Mega Money numbers are drawn twice a week. Powerball is a multi-state lottery with a top prize starting at $40 Million and increasing with each drawing if no winning ticket was purchased. However, in this game the jackpot will be shared among jackpot winners in all Powerball states if there is more than one winning ticket. The winning player must match five numbers between 1 and 53 plus a Powerball number between 1 and 39. The Florida Lotto has a top prize starting at $2 Million and increasing with each drawing if no winning ticket was purchased. The Mega Money game is played by picking four numbers between 1 and 44 plus one Megaball between 1 and 22. Jackpots start at $500,000 and can roll over to up to $2 million if there isn’t a jackpot winner. Once the MEGA MONEY jackpot reaches $2 million, the top prize pool rolls down and increases the payouts on all of the lower-tier prize levels.
The odds of winning any of the Lotto Florida games is based on the degree of difficulty or number of possible winning number combinations, the dollar amount of the prize, the way you choose to play the game and a number of other factors. For details on each game please visit the page dedicated to that game on the official Florida Lottery website.
Rules for claiming lottery prizes are fairly consistent with those of other states. Prizes of less than $600.00 may be claimed at any authorized Florida Lottery retailer and prizes of $600.00 or more may be claimed at any Florida Lottery district office or at Florida Lottery headquarters in Tallahassee. There is a claim by mail option on prizes of $250,000.00 or less, but the U.S. Postal Service regulations include various restrictions on mailing Lottery tickets and the risk of mailing tickets remains with the player. I pesonally would not consider this option under any circumstances.
Revenues earned from the lottery, according to the Florida Legislature, average over $1 Billion per year and are used for the enhancement of public education. Florida’s list of benefactors of this money include public schools, scolarship funds, community colleges, state universities and student aid funds.
